Three VPs Join Eagle Food Team

Centers here has added three executives to its management team. Byron O. Magafas has been named vice president of human resources. He was director of human resources at the St. Louis distribution center of Supervalu, Minneapolis. Magafas succeeds Randy P. Smith, who has left the company, and reports to Bob Kelly, president and chief executive officer.

Pat Plumley was named vice president and controller. Plumley's 25-year supermarket career has included various posts at Kash n' Karry Food Stores and Lucky Stores. He was most recently senior vice president of accounting and administration at the Supersaver division of American Stores Co., Salt Lake City.

Plumley succeeds Gary H. Long, who has left the company, and reports to Herb Dotterer, senior vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer.

Joe Shasha was named vice president of grocery and health and beauty care. Shasha joins the company from Vons Cos., Arcadia, Calif., where he spent 25 years in various capacities in the deli/dairy, grocery and meat divisions, including buyer, category manager and senior category manager. Most recently, he was vice president of meat and seafood operations. Shasha succeeds John N.A. Turley, who has left the company, and he reports to Dave Norton, senior vice president of retailing.

Eagle Food Centers operates 91 stores in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana.

IGA Taps President for Pacific

CHICAGO -- IGA here has named Mike Abney, 49, president and managing director for IGA Pacific, based in Sydney, Australia.

Abney succeeds Mike Stanphill, who has moved into the role of general manager of retail services at Davids Ltd., the wholesaler and "owning company" that supplies IGA licensed retailers in Australia (except for Western Australia) and Papua, New Guinea.

Previously, Abney was director of operations for IGA Pacific. He came to IGA in 1992 from Fleming Cos., Oklahoma City.

In his new position, Abney is charged with lifting the national identity of the IGA group in Australia, which includes some 250 supermarkets. He reports to Tom Haggai, chairman and chief executive officer of IGA Inc.

AG of Maine Appoints VP

GARDINER, Maine -- Michael LeBlanc was named vice president of marketing and procurement at Associated Grocers of Maine here. He reports to Alan Decker, president and chief executive officer. LeBlanc was senior director of marketing, advertising and purchasing. In his new position, he oversees all marketing and procurement for the grocery, meat and produce lines as well as all contact with outside vendors. LeBlanc has been with AG for 18 years in various sales and marketing capacities.

FICAH Elects Flaim Trustee

WASHINGTON -- The Food Industry Crusade Against Hunger here has elected Steve Flaim as a new board trustee, for a three-year term. Flaim is director of independent grocery segment at Coca-Cola/USA Operations, Atlanta. FICAH is guided by a board of more than 40 trustees and ex-officios.
