He will assume the former responsibilities of Richard Dreiling, who left Safeway in December 2002 to join Longs Drug Stores, Walnut Creek, Calif. Cornell will oversee marketing, merchandising, manufacturing and distribution. He most recently was president of Pepsi-Cola North America's Food Services Division and senior vice president of sales, Pepsi-Cola North America. Cornell joined Pepsi, Purchase, N.Y., through its 1998 acquisition of Tropicana, where he had worked in sales and marketing since 1991. He will report to Steve Burd, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Safeway.

IGA APPOINTS PINNEY, SYLVESTER TO NEW POSITIONS

CHICAGO -- IGA here said it has retained Jerry Pinney, president of consulting firm Jerry Pinney & Associates, also based here, as international coordinator. He will work to expand IGA's global presence and support the company's international programs. Prior to founding his own company, Pinney had a 30-year career in the food industry, which included positions with IGA, the National Grocers Association and Shurfine International. He remains president of his consulting firm. IGA also named Patrick Sylvester editor-at-large of the IGA Grocergram and director of marketing events. He succeeds Bill Hayes, who retired in March. Sylvester previously was vice president of marketing for IGA. He reports to Barbara Wiest, vice president, administration, communications and events.
