WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports received as far back as 2007 of five deaths and a non-fatal heart attack occurring after Monster Energy drinks were consumed.
“We take every issue of injury or death associated with a particular product and we look into it,” said FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess.
While reports of adverse reactions date back to as far as 2004, the FDA first got regulatory authority to collect complaints about the category five years ago, Burgess said.
Records of reports were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the mother of a teenager who died of a cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity after consuming Monster Energy drinks on two consecutive days, according to news reports.
The girl’s mother charges in a lawsuit that the drink maker failed to warn consumers about the risks of its energy drinks. Monster did not return SN’s request for comment.
