Longtime Hy-Vee Veteran Mitchell Retires

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Hy-Vee here said Rose Kleyweg Mitchell, senior vice president of governmental affairs, is retiring this fall after a 35-year career with the company.

Mitchell started working for Hy-Vee in 1978 in a part-time capacity and soon joined the corporate staff as a training supervisor. She was promoted to director of training in 1989, and in 1991 was elected assistant vice president, education and training. The next year she became the first woman to move into the vice president ranks at Hy-Vee with her election as vice president, education and training.

In 1996 Mitchell’s duties at Hy-Vee were expanded to include oversight of governmental affairs. She was promoted to senior vice president in 2005 and joined the Hy-Vee executive committee in 2008.

“As the first woman to serve as a vice president of Hy-Vee and the first to be named to the board of directors, Rose has broken many barriers and set high standards for all to follow,” said Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “She has spent years developing a unique trust with top political leaders at the local, state and national level and has blazed a trail for many women in the industry who see her as a role model.”

Mitchell has been active in the public arena as well, serving on numerous committees of the Food Marketing Institute and chairing the FMI Political Action Committee.

Succeeding Mitchell as vice president, governmental and industry affairs, is Pat Hensley, who had been vice president, general merchandise/fuel for Hy-Vee.
