EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn.Supervalu has hired vice presidents of produce and meat merchandising as the retailer puts increasing focus on fresh departments.

As vice president of produce merchandising, John Jefferson will focus on sourcing and quality control with the aim of improving freshness and in-store experience.

Tom Sargent, the new vice president of meat merchandising, will oversee all aspects of meat and seafood, including growing the retailer’s private label meat sales.

Both new executives come to Supervalu from Kroger Co. Jefferson most recently led special projects related to deli, while Sargent was in charge of protein strategies and case-ready meats.

“Customers are looking for the freshest high quality produce and meat in our stores, and providing both is a top priority for us at Supervalu,” Mark Van Buskirk, executive vice president of merchandising, marketing and retail, said in a statement. “Adding both John and Tom to oversee these areas will help us accelerate this effort. I’m pleased to welcome them to the team and look forward to the positive impact this will have on our customers.
