SILVER SPRING, Md. — For the second time in a two-week period, fruit was cited as a possible source of salmonella illnesses. Several retailers removed mangoes from stores and issued warnings to customers.

This week Ahold USA’s Giant-Landover, Giant-Carlisle, Stop & Shop and Martin’s banners announced precautionary measures following a voluntary recall by distributors of the Mexico-grown Daniella brand mangoes, PLU #4959.

United Supermarkets removed all Mexican mangoes from stores, also recalling five of its private label Market Street fresh-cut fruit products containing mango.

“There is no evidence at this time that any products that have come through our stores were contaminated — we are simply taking every precaution in an effort to protect the welfare of our guests,” Tommy Wilkins, United’s director of produce procurement, said in a statement.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency was the first to issue a warning for Daniella mangoes on Aug. 24 after confirming several cases of Salmonella Braenderup associated with the product. The agency extended its warning to PLU #4051 on Wednesday.

The Food and Drug Administration has indicated mangoes are also a likely source of illnesses in the U.S., but the investigation of the source is ongoing. As of last week, there were 103 U.S. cases of Salmonella Braenderup reported, with 78 in California, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

This outbreak is distinct from the salmonella strain that the CDC matched this week to cantaloupe from Chamberlain Farms in Owensville, Ind., which sickened 178 in multiple states and caused two deaths in Kentucky.*

Update Aug. 29 10:30pm:

The California Department of Public Health warned consumers to avoid Daniella-brand mangoes due to the possible link to the Salmonella Braenderup outbreak, citing PLU numbers 4051, 4959, 4311, 4584 and 3114. There agency now has confirmed 80 California salmonella cases.

*An earlier version of this story incorrrected reported that the two deaths took place in Kansas.
