Sprouts Farmers Market has joined MyFitnessPal as the online health and fitness platform’s first retail sponsor.

Phoenix-based Sprouts said yesterday that it will support MyFitnessPal’s users with healthy recipes, articles, challenges and other content. For example, the natural and organic grocer helped introduce a new enhancement to MyFitnessPal’s Recipe Discovery feature that enables users to search and cook more than 100 healthy recipes, spotlighting fresh ingredients available at Sprouts. Premium MyFitnessPal members can log and save recipes directly in their profile to advance toward their fitness goals.

Sprouts-MyFitnessPal challenges incentivize the app's users to engage in healthier eating.

To date, 2,169 Sprouts recipes have been accessed by users of the MyFitnessPal app, the specialty grocer said.

Last year, Sprouts and MyFitnessPal launched the Squash Your Goals Challenge, which urged users to achieve their New Year’s healthy eating goals by logging 20 meals in 30 days. Almost 121,000 users participated in the challenge, and more than 5.2 million healthy meals were logged in the app, according to Sprouts.

Throughout the year, plans call for Sprouts to publish a series of articles on the MyFitnessPal blog to encourage consumers to enjoy seasonal produce and select healthy products to support their lifestyles. One of the articles, posted in June, listed hydrating produce that helps quench summer thirst and noted that seasonal melons from Sprouts, such as watermelon and cantaloupe, are full of nutrients and vitamins while being made up of 90% or more water.

MyFitnessPal’s platform has more than 14 million foods in its database, access to over 500 recipes from registered dietitians and 150-plus workout routines. Since 2005, MyFitnessPal has helped 200 million users in 168 countries log detailed information about their daily activities and provided content to help consumers improve their health and well-being. A MyFitnessPal premium subscription gives members access to expert guidance and exclusive wellness resources.

Overall, Sprouts now operates more than 360 stores in 23 states, and the chain plans to have opened 20 new stores by the end of this year.
