DENVER — On the brink of a strike against supermarket employers, members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 here voted this week to oust its longtime president, Ernest Duran, along with 19 of 25 members of its board of directors. Kim Cordova, a rank-and-file employee of Safeway, will take over as president Jan. 1.

It was unclear how or if the voting would affect ongoing consideration of a “final offer” from employers Safeway and Kroger/King Soopers. Published reports this week indicated workers in Denver voted this week to reject Safeway’s latest offer, but votes in other locales are still ongoing.

Duran had served as union president since 1998. Published reports said Wednesday that Duran intended to challenge the results.
