Foodtown, Unions React to Supplier Switch

AVENEL, N.J. — Foodtown’s switch to a new primary supplier has raised the ire of Teamsters likely to be laid off as a result of the switch, but the cooperative’s relationship with union-represented store workers remains strong, reports said.

AVENEL, N.J. — Foodtown’s switch to a new primary supplier has raised the ire of Teamsters likely to be laid off as a result of the switch, but the cooperative’s relationship with union-represented store workers remains strong, reports said.

Two unions representing workers at Foodtown stores bought ads in the Asbury Park Press newspaper last week saying there was no dispute between store workers and Foodtown. The ad was in response to a leafleting campaign urging shoppers to boycott Foodtown, staged by White Rose workers represented by the Teamsters, reports said.

Foodtown officials were not immediately available for comment.
