AKRON, Ohio — Fred W. Albrecht Grocery Co. here will launch a fuel rewards program on May 1 in partnership with Acme Fresh Markets and Circle K convenience store, Jim Trout, vice president of sales and merchandising confirmed.

He said the company has been monitoring consumer demand and value that fuel rewards have brought to other food retailers in the Northeast.

The chain has been signing up shoppers for a fuel rewards card linked to Acme’s loyalty savings card. Free gas rewards will be loaded onto a fuel rewards card within 48 hours after a store purchase for free gas redemption at Circle K locations.

The retailer will mark more than 3,000 items weekly with green tags for fuel savings rewards. The rewards range from 5 cents to $20 in free fuel (on large purchases, such as patio furniture).

Local competitor Giant Eagle’s “fuelperks!” program is based upon 10 cents off for every $50 in goods purchased at stores.

The green-tagged items will be a mix of Acme's private label and branded products.

About 100 Circle K stores are in Northeast Ohio in the counties where Acme has locations. The redemption stations will display Acme Fuel Rewards logos to let customers know the gas stations participate in the program. The Fuel Rewards program will be available at all 16 Acme stores, including the Henry's Acme in West Akron, a franchise store.
