Giant Stores Close for Union Vote

Giant Food Stores here will close most of its stores from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today to allow employees who are members of United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 400 and 27 to vote on a new contract agreement that was reached over the weekend, a Giant spokesman told SN yesterday.

LANDOVER, Md. — Giant Food Stores here will close most of its stores from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today to allow employees who are members of United Food and Commercial Workers Locals 400 and 27 to vote on a new contract agreement that was reached over the weekend, a Giant spokesman told SN yesterday. Baltimore-Washington area Safeway stores, whose employees are also covered by the pact, will not be closed, the union said. Details of the contract were not disclosed.
