HERNDON, Va. — Adele Douglass, founder and executive director of Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) — a non-profit, certification organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals raised for food — has been cited by Ashoka, an international organization of social entrepreneurs.
Since Douglass launched HFAC in 2003, the organization has certified 65 companies. In 2008 alone, those companies raised 22 million animals under HFAC standards. D'Agostino Supermarkets, Larchmont, N.Y., and Heinen's, Cleveland, Ohio, and other retailers have been promoting HFAC-certified products.
D'Agostino's has encouraged all its livestock, poultry, dairy and egg producers to seek humane-raised and -handled certification through HFAC.
