Martin’s Display Case Doors Save Energy

Martin’s Super Markets, South Bend, Ind., has retrofitted 88 feet of upright refrigeration display cases at a store here with new glass doors in a pilot program to increase energy efficiency.

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Martin’s Super Markets, South Bend, Ind., has retrofitted 88 feet of upright refrigeration display cases at a store here with new glass doors in a pilot program to increase energy efficiency.

The doors can reduce energy consumption up to 60% over traditional open food cases, according to Remis America, Elkhart, Ind., the supplier of the doors. Martin’s plans to install the doors in approximately half its stores in North Central Indiana and Southern Michigan over the coming year, said Remis America.

“The case doors have lights, so visibility is improved and food items ‘pop’ more,” said Chris Robinson, dairy manager at the store here. He said he’s noticed a “big difference” in the air temperature for shoppers in his department, and that many products are now selling better.
