BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here said yesterday it is providing approximately $430,000 in disaster relief and reconstruction for parts of central China affected by Monday’s earthquake. A portion of the money will go to the China Red Cross for disaster relief, the company said, with additional funds earmarked to help reconstruct devastated communities. In partnership with local communities and authorities, the company has been offering supplies and assistance to its store associates and customers in the impacted areas, including water, food, batteries and clothing. Wal-Mart began opening supercenters, Sam’s Clubs and Neighborhood Markets in China in 1996 and, since investing last year in a local hypermarket chain called Trust-Mart, now operates 205 retail stores in the country.
