Jewel-Osco introduces new mascot and kids’ club

“JOJO” to promote healthy eating and exercise

Jewel-Osco’s newest employee is a furry red Cyclops.

In late June, the division of Albertsons Cos. Inc. introduced the anamorphic character known as “JOJO” (the “J” and “O” stand for Jewel-Osco) as part of a campaign to promote healthy eating among children.

“This will help our customers-in-training eat right, exercise often and enjoy grocery shopping at Jewel-Osco,” according to a blog post on Jewel-Osco’s website.

Ads posted online highlight “JOJO’s picks” on items like fruits and vegetables.

Jewel-Osco operates 186 stores throughout greater Chicago, Indiana and Iowa. The company is the “stalking horse” bidder http://www.supermarketnews.com/retail-financial/jewel-makes-100m-offer-19-strack-van-til-stores for 19 Strack & Van Til stores in Indiana currently under a bankruptcy auction.

Central Grocers, which is selling the stores, said in a court filing that an auction held last week did not attract any qualified bidders. The auction was adjourned and will resume on Tuesday.
