Washington, D.C., area Harris Teeter grocery stores have started requiring customers to show receipts before they exit the store, according to an ABC7 News report.
The Kroger-owned banner also is banning duffel bags, large backpacks, roller bags, and suitcases from the store.
A Harris Teeter spokesperson said in an email to Supermarket News that the new policy at its three D.C. locations was aimed at helping “maintain a safe shopping experience” and “providing the best service and goods at competitive prices to our customers.”
The ABC7 story notes that Harris Teeter isn’t the first area grocer to implement new security strategies.
A Safeway in the Columbia Heights neighborhood installed security gates in February, and a CVS Pharmacy in the same neighborhood closed its doors after it was the target of multiple thefts.
Also, a D.C. Giant grocery store discontinued the sale of some brands in September due to theft. Giant officials said at the time that it had lost half a million dollars in revenue to shoplifting.
