Gallery: A Community Grocer Grows in Downtown L.A.

Urban Radish lives in a building that was formerly a glass factory. The project team Creative Space worked to keep the gritty outside of the building, while developing an inviting interior.

“Our tagline is, ‘We’re a market rooted in tradition,’ and for us tradition means going back to the days when not only as individuals grew our own vegetables, but we shopped at markets where the vegetables were fresh," said founder Carolyn Paxton.

After a soft launch in July, Urban Radish held a grand opening on Aug. 17.

The grocer partners with the group Homeboy Industries, a group that helps former gang members gain job skills. About 10 full-time employees from Homeboy Industries work at Urban Radish.

The retailer has been making more bakery items and sourcing other items from outside bakeries, such as the bread that comes parbaked from France.
