H-E-B serves up enticing menu at new Main Streat food hall

H-E-B this week opened a food hall and bar at its store in the Mueller section of Austin, Texas, that houses six restaurants.

Called Main Streat by H-E-B, the venue marks a first for the Austin community, H-E-B said. Restaurants inside the food hall include Roots Chicken Shak, True Texas BBQ, Calle Taqueria, Yumai Japanese Grill, The Meltery and Bar at Mueller.

The Roots Chicken Shak, known for its duck fat-fried chicken by chef Tiffany Derry, is the restaurant’s first location in Austin. Derry, who appeared on Bravo’s “Top Chef” TV show, opened her first Roots Chicken Shak in Plano, Texas, in 2017. The menu includes duck fat-fried chicken wings and strips; Big Bird and Spicy Bird chicken sandwiches; Shak caesar salad and The Barnyard Cobb salad; duck fat fries with house-made Clucking sauces; banana pudding made with vanilla custard, cookies and fresh banana; and Southern sweet tea.

True Texas BBQ serves brisket, ribs, turkey, sausage, barbecue sandwiches and side dishes, such as mac and cheese and potato salad, while the Yumai Japanese Grill features rice and noodle bowls as well as Japanese-style vegetables, chicken, beef and shrimp skewers.

A street taco-inspired restaurant, Calle Taqueria offers tacos with handmade flour or corn tortillas, tortas, quesadillas and bowls, with options including trompo al pastor, pork carnitas, adobo smoked brisket and plant-based Impossible picadillo. Sides include Mexican street corn, roasted beets and pepitas, and house escabeche.

The Meltery gourmet grilled-cheese shop makes an array of sandwiches served on sourdough, Seedelicious, keto or Texas toast bread, all pressed in garlic butter. And the Bar at Mueller serves snacks and shared plates such as Texas tater tots and a meat and cheese tray, along with a full menu of draft beer, wine and cocktails, including offerings from Texas breweries, wineries and distilleries.

“We worked hard to create this space and develop tasty menu items, and we’re thrilled to open Main Streat to the entire Austin community,” Kristin Irvin, director of made-to-order restaurants at H-E-B, said in a statement. “We’re even more excited to partner with Chef Tiffany Derry. Not only is her food amazing and full of flavor, but her passion for feeding and caring for the community, increasing food education and access, and addressing racial inequity is inspiring and mirrors our beliefs.”

Main Streat by H-E-B operates from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday to Sunday. The H-E-B Mueller store is located at 1801 E. 51st St. in Austin. Food hall items are available for takeout, limited-capacity dining on the outdoor patio and inside, and free delivery from H-E-B’s Favor delivery service. The Bar at Mueller also offers beer, wine and cocktails for in-person to-go orders. H-E-B noted that its COVID-19 safety measures for the Mueller store — including required face coverings, social distancing and cleaning/sanitation — also apply to the Main Streat food hall and bar.
