NEW YORK -- A Gristedes supermarket on Roosevelt Island here next week will be receiving electrical power from five underwater turbines powered by the tidal currents of the East River. The kinetic hydropower generators will make Gristedes the world‘s first supermarket powered by tidal currents, said Trey Taylor, co-founder and president of Verdant Power, told SN in an interview. The Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy project has been under way since 2002 and currently has a single turbine providing supplemental electricity to the store, Taylor said. -- Jon Springer
