'Upscale' Aldi to Go Up Near Akron, Ohio

BATAVIA, Ill. — Aldi, a discount supermarket owned by the same family in Germany as Trader Joe’s, is expanding its Ohio presence with a new store on a highly built-up retail strip in the town of Fairlawn, according to a report in the Akron Beacon Journal. Kevin McClure, director of real estate for Aldi's Hinckley division said the company had been working to secure that site for about three years. Fairlawn Mayor Bill Roth told the newspaper that Aldi is, “trying to make it more of an upper-scale store.'' This is a change for a company that, according to McClure, is “built on efficiencies.” Aldi has 800 stores currently in the U.S. and will open the new store in October across the street from a supermarket of Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh. The Fred W. Albrecht Grocery Co., Akron, has also has an Acme supermarket nearby.
