SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Village Super Markets, the ShopRite operator based here, has agreed to acquire one of the nine stores in southern New Jersey that Stop & Shop last week said it planned to sell to Elizabeth, N.J.-based Wakefern, the cooperative that supplies the ShopRite chain. The store, located in Absecon, is expected to close over the summer and reopen as ShopRite “no sooner than mid-September,” said Kevin Begley, chief financial officer, Village. Village operates 23 ShopRites, including another ShopRite in Absecon that the company plans to keep open because it serves a separate neighborhood, Begley explained. According to reports, at least one of the nine stores Wakefern is acquiring, in Rio Grande, N.J., is expected to remain closed. The reports also said that Ammons Supermarkets, another ShopRite operator, was planning to acquire the Stop & Shop in Harrison Township.
