ARCADIA, Calif. -- Vons Grocery Co. here, the Southern California division of Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif., has reintroduced double couponing for the month of January at stores in Los Angeles and Orange counties but not in Nevada and central California. The offer involves doubling manufacturer coupons with a value up to $1, for a maximum redemption of $2 per coupon. Vons had ceased doubling the value of manufacturer coupons early last year after doing so for more than 20 years, though it came back in the spring with a short-term double-coupon promotion. A chain spokeswoman told SN at the time that Vons had decided to stop the practice “because manufacturers are putting out fewer coupons and we're seeing less redemptions.” Besides, she added, using the Vons club card “gives manufacturers more exposure for their products” than coupon drops. -- Elliot Zwiebach
