Almost five months after the city of Jacksonville, Fla., was hit with tragedy when three people were shot and killed inside a Dollar General, the store is now expected to reopen on Friday, reports local affiliate News4JAX.
A makeshift memorial still exists in front of the location.
On Aug. 26, Ryan Palmeter, who worked at a Dollar Tree, entered the Dollar General location and fatally shot Angela Carr, Jerrald Gallion, and A.J. Laguerre before turning the gun on himself. Investigators have said they believe the act was racially motivated. All three of the victims were black.
The families of the victims of the shooting have sued the owner of the Dollar General and a security guard for negligence.
They believe more security should have been in place at the Dollar General store, which is in a high-crime area, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit states that proper precautions had not been put in place at the Dollar General store “to again deter Palmeter from attacking and killing innocent persons.”
The lawyer representing the family of Angela Carr sent a letter to city officials, city council members, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis demanding change, reports Jacksonville news radio station WOKV.
