SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion is holding grand re-opening festivities this week at 169 stores in the Carolinas where it has completed the final phase of its “rebranding” effort.

The effort included new, lower prices, the addition of MVP Savings Centers to its stores and enhanced quality and variety in produce. The latest markets include Greenville, N.C.; Wilmington, N.C.; Columbia, S.C.; Charleston, S.C.; and Myrtle Beach, S.C.

"With today's launch, nearly all Food Lion stores have received these store investments," said Greg Finchum, senior vice president of retail operations for Food Lion.

The first 50 customers at each location in the latest phase of the relaunch will receive a bag of free groceries Wednesday through Saturday. Food Lion also said it plans to donate $2,000 to local food banks, which will help each agency provide up to 10,000 meals to its constituents.

Food Lion first launched the effort at 167 stores in the Raleigh and Fayetteville, N.C., markets in May 2011 and rolled it out across its other markets over the following two years. As previously reported, the revamps are credited with improving sales at the chain, although price investments have pressured margins.
