Meijer finishes rollout of Shop & Scan

All 246 stores now offer mobile checkout option

Supercenter retailer Meijer has wrapped up the deployment of Shop & Scan technology to all of its stores.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer said it completed the 15-month project yesterday with the rollout of the mobile checkout services to 44 stores in southeastern Michigan.

Shop & Scan made its debut in November 2017 in a pilot at 54 stores in Michigan, starting in the Grand Rapids area and then reaching to more locations during 2018. Most recently in 2019, the service was expanded to 23 stores in Chicago and northwestern Indiana in March and then to all 42 Meijer stores in Ohio in July.

“As we’ve rolled the program out in six states, the response has been incredibly enthusiastic,” Stephanie Brackenridge, director of customer experience at Meijer, said in a statement. “Customers have appreciated the ability to have a choice in shopping how they want, depending on how their day is going. Many are finding the opportunity to personalize their store visit with a cell phone is a great way to save time and help avoid lines.”

Shop & Scan service is accessed via the free Meijer Mobile app. To use the tool, customers scan product barcodes with their smartphone and then add the items to their digital cart. As they shop the store, a running total is kept as groceries and other merchandise are scanned and bagged. Shoppers pay for their items by going to a self-checkout lane and then scanning their smartphone.

Since the Shop & Scan pilot launch last year in Grand Rapids, the Meijer app has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times as the Shop & Scan service expanded across the retailer’s market area. Once customers have downloaded the app, over 80% have repeatedly used Shop & Scan as part of their shopping experience, Meijer noted.

The most popular features, according to Brackenridge, are the integrated shopping list, running total and the ability to clip any available coupons from the mPerks rewards program for items scanned.

Along with Shop & Scan, Meijer offers online grocery delivery and pickup at all 246 stores.
