In this role, which will be based in Carlisle, Pa., Herring will be responsible for overseeing general merchandise, pet, fuel, dairy and frozen departments. With Herring’s appointment, Ahold USA’s non-perishable category has been reorganized into two leadership streams as part of its ongoing strategy to get closer to market and customers’ needs. Jeff Dichele continues his role as SVP, non-perishable merchandising, now with oversight for the beverage, commercial bakery and baking, breakfast, candy, ethnic and specialty and natural and organic departments.

Herring joins Ahold USA with 23 years of experience in various roles at Safeway. She began her career as a deli department manager and steadily progressed into multi-unit roles. Herring also worked in leadership roles in corporate merchandising, marketing and category management. Most recently, she was VP of category development consumer brands where she had end-to-end responsibility for perishable strategy including financial goals, product development, merchandising, pricing and execution.

“Tonya brings a real passion for the grocery business to her new role with Ahold USA and her strong balance of operations, marketing and merchandising experience blends well with our team,” Mark McGowan, EVP of merchandising, Ahold USA, said in a statement.
