Grocery distributor and retailer SpartanNash aims to fill more than 1,000 job openings in its 155 corporate-owned and -operated supermarkets.

The hiring drive, announced Monday, includes store associate, director and manager positions; department-specific roles such as bakery leads, deli clerks and meat apprentices; and specialty jobs such as baristas and personal shoppers for online grocery orders. SpartanNash said additional openings also are available at its distribution warehouses and corporate service centers.

“Being in the business of ‘taking food places’ means we provide essential services to our customers and communities. We know that our associates are our most valuable asset and, now more than ever, are our frontline heroes,” Yvonne Trupiano, executive vice president and chief human resources officer at SpartanNash, said in a statement. “In turn, we are proud to provide competitive Total Rewards benefits; training, development and advancement opportunities; and a commitment to cultivate relationships based on respect, integrity, teamwork and trust to build a winning culture.”

SpartanNash said all positions offer flexible shifts for days, nights and weekends plus steady hours “as an essential service provider in a growing sales environment.” Opportunities also are available for long-term career growth and development, including leadership roles in selected markets, the company added.

“Our family of associates includes team members who began their career in entry-level positions and advanced to senior leadership positions,” commented Tom Swanson, executive vice president and general manager of corporate retail at SpartanNash  “I’ve been in the industry for three decades, and I got my start as a bagger. We’re proud to offer a people-first culture with development opportunities and formal programs for interested associates to develop and advance into specialty positions and even into store leadership. We take pride in service excellence and enjoy providing a great customer experience.”

SpartanNash’s grocery retail banners include Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets, D&W Fresh Market, VG’s Grocery, Dan’s Supermarket, Econofoods, Family Fresh Market, Forest Hills Foods, No Frills, Pick’n Save, Sun Mart Foods, Supermercado Nuestra Familia and ValuLand.

Overall, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based SpartanNash has nearly 19,000 associates. In August, SpartanNash also initiated a hiring push to fill over 375 full- and part-time jobs at its stores — namely Family Fare and D&W Fresh Market — and distribution center in western Michigan. The company has seen surging sales growth in its retail and food distribution businesses from an upswing in consumer demand during the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier, in mid-March, SpartanNash launched a program to hire displaced workers and students in its nine-state retail footprint and 14-state distribution network for temporary jobs. At the time, the company said “unprecedented” retail and distribution volume was trending at two to three times normal sales levels at some locations since the COVID-19 outbreak.
