New concepts and redesigns: 12 exciting grocery experiences that debuted in 2020

While grocery retailers faced many challenges in 2020, it didn’t slow them down from refreshing old looks, introducing new concepts and creating innovative shopping experiences for their customers.

One of the biggest launches of the year was Amazon’s new supermarket concept, Amazon Fresh. With two stores currently open in the Los Angeles area, plans call for the e-tail giant to expand its new brick-and-mortar stores in other California locations as well as four stores in Chicago. The stores serve up a mix of national and private brands and fresh produce, meat and seafood, along with an array of prepared foods made fresh in store daily, Amazon said.

More traditional grocery chains also upped their game with exciting new looks and concepts: Raley’s new O-N-E Market offers fresh and healthy food for active lifestyles at its striking “ski chalet” store in Truckee, Calif.; Schnuck Markets is also going the healthy and natural route with its new EatWell concept in St. Louis; and “grocerants” and food halls were booming for a number of retailers, including Longo Brothers in Toronto, H-E-B in Texas and Kroger’s QFC stores in the Pacific Northwest.

Here are 12 new concepts and redesigns from 10 retailers that caught our attention in 2020.
