STAMFORD, Conn. — Ikan Technologies here, which markets a home-shopping system that equips consumers with a scanning device to use at home for ordering groceries, announced yesterday that it has signed up five New York-area independent food retailers to support the system. The retailers are The Westside Market, which operates three stores in Manhattan; Pioneer Market, with one store in Manhattan; Met Fresh and KRM Kollel Supermarket in Brooklyn; and Brach’s Supermarket in Lawrence. Shoppers use the wireless device to scan items as they are being discarded, thereby creating an online shopping list at www.ikan.net that can be supplemented and edited. The list, which also tells the shoppers whether an item can be recycled, is submitted via Ikan to the retailer, which fulfills and delivers the order. For produce and other items without a bar code, shoppers can speak into the Ikan device, which uses voice recognition to add the item to the online list, said Fred Wagner, chief executive officer and co-founder of Ikan. The scanning device retails for $399 but is being promoted for $99 by some of the retailers. “We have 100 households using the system and it’s growing fast,” said Wagner.
