The Best Practices and Emerging Solutions Toolkit includes topics such as ways to overcome obstacles to food donation, new technologies like energy production opportunities, and how to avoid food waste generation. Companies who have not yet thought about food waste reduction plans can refer to a section called Getting Started.

The toolkit is based on the knowledge and experience of more than 30 FWRA member companies. The consortium also sought input from Feeding America, a network of more than 200 food banks nationwide.

"One of the most valuable features of the toolkit is that it includes examples and insights from companies that illustrate the strategies outlined.  What's more, the alliance recognizes that there are operational differences between food manufacturers, retailers and foodservice companies, so there are case studies that speak to the unique concerns and challenges of each sector," Jason Wadsworth, sustainability coordinator for Wegmans Food Markets and toolkit co-author, said in a press release.
