The alliance, which formed in 2011, plans to release a best practices guide and toolkit on reducing food waste this fall, as well as to research and report on industry barriers to achieving food waste goals.

There will be dedicated sessions on food waste at the FMI-GMA Global Sustainability Summit Aug. 13-16. The Food Waste Reduction Alliance website will also launch in August.

General Mills and Unilever have also joined the USDA’s challenge with commitments to reduce food waste.
