NEW YORK — SN has selected Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, First Alternative Natural Foods Co-op and C&S Wholesale Grocers as the winners of the 2010 Sustainability Excellence Awards in the chain, independent and wholesaler categories, respectively.

Fresh & Easy, El Segundo, Calif., has made a large commitment to sustainability since launching small-format stores in the U.S., and has unveiled a series of new initiatives this year. Both First Alternative, Corvallis, Ore., and C&S, Keene, N.H., have stepped up their investment in environmental initiatives over the past few years.

Profiles of the three companies’ environmental initiatives can be found in this week’s print edition of SN and at supermarketnews.com.
