Wegmans Informs Shoppers With #WegSandy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — After fielding countless calls and tweets in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Wegmans here has created the Twitter hashtag #WegSandy to keep shoppers up-to-date.

Recent tweets have informed shoppers about available inventories and early closing times.

"Our Nazareth, PA store has milk, no eggs & our Bethlehem, PA store has both milk & eggs," tweeted Wegmans.

"Tonight's NJ closing Ocean and Manalapan @4pm; Bridgewater @8pm. Others til midnight. Be safe, everyone!"

While all stores are operational, with generators keeping locations open in areas most affected by the storm, getting employees to work safely in its hard hit Jersey shore area has been a challenge, blogged senior vice president of consumer affairs Mary Ellen Burris.

"Sufficient gasoline is a problem," she said. "We are working with the communities in need to determine how we can help with storm recovery."

Wegmans is also working with suppliers to get essentials like water, milk, eggs, bread and batteries to its stores.

"Some deliveries to our stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland were delayed because of road closures. Our distribution and warehouse teams are working with stores to help return product inventories to their proper levels," said Burris.
