WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Tops Friendly Markets here said it has launched a 50th anniversary promotion in which it will allow customers to earn free groceries.

The Tops’ 50th Anniversary Free For All Gigantic Grocery Giveaway began on Sunday and runs through Jan. 5.

Customers can earn Gold Anniversary Points and redeem them for a variety of free products ranging from Tops brand products like bread, eggs, sugar and butter to brand-name items such as Tide laundry detergent, General Mills cereal and Birds Eye vegetables. Shoppers can also accumulate Gold Anniversary Points to redeem a free Tops frozen turkey in time for the holiday season.

“As we gear up for the grand finale of this year’s anniversary celebration, we want to say ‘thank you’ in a unique and fun way to our associates, customers and communities for allowing us to be a part of their family for 50 years,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and chief executive officer, in a prepared statement.

The promotion will use peel-off tickets awarded to each customer at checkout. The tickets contain anywhere from five to 1,000 points, which are then added to the customer’s loyalty card. Free products can be earned for reaching thresholds of 100, 250, 500 or 1,000 points.

Customers can also earn five additional Gold Anniversary Points on more than 2,000 individual participating vendor products they purchase at Tops with their Tops BonusPlus or BonusCard. In addition, each time shoppers turn in their ticket, they will be automatically entered into a weekly drawing for a chance to win free groceries for a year.
