CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant and Martin’s food stores on Friday celebrated the chain’s 90th anniversary with an event at Giant’s store here and cake and apple slices served at all 200 of its stores.
Giant was founded as the Carlisle Meat Market of Central Pennsylvania on Oct. 4, 1923 by David Javitch. Ten years later Javitch bought a second store in Lewistown, Pa., and converted that a new concept selling dry goods and perishables under one roof known as Giant Shopping Center.
Giant purchased the Martin’s chain of Hagerstown, Md. in 1970.
In 1981, the group was acquired by Netherlands-based Ahold, which still operates Giant today.
Friday’s anniversary event capped off 90 days of giving throughout local communities including a $9,000 donation to Project SHARE, a Carlisle-based hunger agency.
