HAZELWOOD, Mo. -- Ted Wetterau has retired as chairman and chief executive officer of Supervalu's Wetterau unit based here and as vice chairman of Supervalu.

Larry Anderson, vice chairman of Wetterau, will continue to head that unit. Ted Wetterau's vice chairman position at Supervalu will not be filled. As a result of the change, the company ushered in 1994 without a member of the Wetterau family in its ranks. Ted Wetterau's grandfather, George H. Wetterau, founded the company in 1869. Wetterau will join his two sons, Mark and Conrad, in their venture, Wetterau Associates, a holding company. Both of his sons previously had left their positions at Wetterau.

Ted Wetterau served as chairman of Wetterau since 1974 and chief executive officer since 1970. During his 40-year career with the company, he worked in every aspect of the corporation, which posted nearly $6 billion in sales in 1992, the year of its merger with Supervalu. Wetterau, who has held many industry posts, is a current director of the Food Marketing Institute.
