ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets is selling more canning jars and other supplies used to preserve homegrown tomatoes, fruits, jams, jellies and pickles.
“Last year, sales of canning jars and related supplies shot up about 30%,” said Debbie Hauck, who oversees the category for Wegmans, in a statement. “We’ve surpassed that already this year, and people are buying jars earlier this season.”
Improved sales may be the result of increased supply, according to the retailer. When supplies from Jarden Home Brands — the largest supplier of canning jars in the U.S. — ran out last year retailers couldn’t restock them to meet demand.
Freezer containers are selling three times as quickly as they did last year, according to the retailer. Compared to heat-processing, freezer preservation of fresh foods is usually quicker and simpler, and retains more of the flavor and texture of the food.
“Freezer jams are a wonderful way for families to try preserving food at home,” Hauck said. “They’re easy, delicious, and it’s fun to do with the kids.”
Produce department and meal coach employees in Wegmans stores have attended demonstrations on how to make freezer jams, and are now telling customers how to do it at home.
