“Big Y’s buyers placed orders for this year’s supply of turkeys last June as is typical for this item. Today, they were notified by Butterball that their orders along with those of all other retailers across the country had been cut by 50%,” Big Y said in a media statement on Wednesday.

To compensate for the shortage, Big Y will be offering more Butterball 16-pound-plus frozen turkeys, Butterball's smaller fresh turkeys and other turkey brands.

“All of us at Big Y will do our best to ensure that our customers have a wonderful turkey for their Thanksgiving meal. Our butchers stand ready to assist customers not only with their turkey selection but cooking tips as well. We are confident that everyone will be happy with their meal,” said Guy McFarlane, vice president of fresh foods.

Update: Butterball confirmed it has a shortage of fresh turkeys due to "unexpected low weight gains."

"While we are continuing to evaluate all potential causes, we are working to remedy the issue and are currently seeing turkey weight gain improvements," Butterball said in an emailed statement.
