SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets is making the switch to recyclable trays for its meat products, the retailer announced Thursday on America Recycles Day.

The trays started appearing in all Weis stores earlier this year for kabobs and ground sausage. The retailer plans to begin using the trays for its ground beef products in early 2013.

Weis partnered with Clearly Clean Products to create the new trays, which are made from 80% recycled plastic. The retailer expects the trays to eventually replace 11 tons of non-recyclable materials previously used in the meat department.

The recycled trays are one part of the retailer’s larger sustainability initiatives, which include a recent expansion of its composting program and the opening of its first LEED-certified store
