Deep-discount grocer Lidl has begun offering online grocery delivery via Shipt at its stores in northern Virginia.

Shipt said Tuesday that fresh foods, household essentials and other grocery items ordered through its online marketplace can now be delivered from Lidl stores in Ashburn, Fredericksburg, Manassas and Woodbridge, Va., in as soon as an hour to residents in the surrounding area.

The rollout extends Lidl’s reach through the Shipt service to more than 360,000 households in THE region.

“Northern Virginia is home for Lidl US, and we are happy to expand our pilot with Shipt to offer our northern Virginia neighbors another convenient way to experience Lidl’s award-winning products,” Zara Khaleeli, senior project manager at Lidl US, said in a statement. “Starting today, Shipt customers in northern Virginia can have Lidl’s high-quality groceries delivered directly to their doors.”

Lidl first piloted the Shipt home delivery service in the Greenville, S.C., market last October. The following December, the pilot was expanded to Lidl stores in the Raleigh, Winston-Salem and Charlotte, N.C., as well as the Spartanburg, Rock Hill and Indian Land, S.C., metropolitan areas, encompassing over 500,000 households.

This year, in late January, Shipt and Lidl launched a pilot in the Richmond, Va., area, covering another 340,000-plus households. Then in mid-March, Lidl in the Hampton Roads, Va., metro market began offering Shipt home delivery.

Germany-based Lidl opened its first U.S. stores last June. Shipt noted that the extension of its service with Lidl to northern Virginia provides customers another avenue for purchasing the retailer’s fresh produce and groceries. To support the expansion, Shipt plans to add more personal shoppers to its network in the area to help select, bag and deliver orders.

“This expansion diversifies our store offerings to include Lidl, a favorite of northern Virginia residents,” stated Bill Smith, founder and chief executive officer of Birmingham, Ala.-based Shipt, part of Target Corp. “Lidl’s affordability and quality make this expansion a natural fit for Shipt, and residents in northern Virginia will be able to access their staple Lidl products in a whole new way.”
