Metro Inc. plans to sell over 14,000 kilograms (30,865 pounds) of local greenhouse-grown strawberries at stores in Quebec this spring.
The retailer tested out La Frissonnante strawberries, grown by Les Serres René Fontaine, at two Les 5 Saisons locations this winter.
The berries are grown without pesticides or fungicides in a research and development greenhouse.
“We are very excited at the idea of extending the offer of La Frissonnante strawberries this spring and of contributing to the economic growth of local farmers. This decision highlights the efforts made by Metro, particularly within the framework of our Local Purchasing Policy, as well as our concrete impact on the development of the local agri-food sector,” Bernadette Hamel, VP, national procurement — produce, said in a press release.
