LOS ANGELES — Arden Group, parent company of Gelson's Markets, said it plans to open a new Gelson's late next year — the first new Gelson's since the company opened a store in Pasadena, Calif., in September 2001.

The store, a 26,000-square-foot former Albertsons, is located in Long Beach, Calif. Arden said it has entered into a lease for the property and will take possession on March 1, though the development and opening of the store are subject to governmental approvals. It also said the store will undergo extensive remodeling before it opens under the new banner.

Gelson’s currently operates 17 high-end supermarkets in Southern California, with annual sales of about $413 million. It closed one location earlier this year.
