New Schnucks Fresh format debuts in Indiana

Fresh-focused concept is regional grocer’s latest banner

The new Schnucks Fresh grocery store from St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets opened last week in Jasper, Ind., as the latest new concept for the Midwest regional supermarket chain. The store debuts a smaller-format design for Schnucks focused around its fresh departments, including produce, meat, seafood and bakery.

“As a new format for us, Schnucks Fresh will be a store that customers will be able to quickly and easily navigate, where they will find an extensive selection of the same fresh products for which Schnucks is known throughout the Midwest,” said Schnucks Markets Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck in a statement.

The new store employs approximately 30 teammates. Prospective associates can visit the Schnucks Careers page to apply.

Leading the team at Schnucks Fresh and relocating to Jasper from Columbia, Ill., is Store Manager Ted Walker. Walker is a 40-year grocery veteran and has been with Schnucks since 2008.

“Customers new to Schnucks will soon find out that ‘fresh’ is what we do best, and in Jasper, it’s right there in our name,” Walker said prior to the store’s opening on Aug. 18. “We’re anxious to get this store open so that we can bring our new neighbors fresh options that they will be proud to serve to their families.”

The 18,000-square-foot Schnucks Fresh location in a former Cash Saver building in Jasper’s Germantown Shopping Center was completed by Chesterfield, Mo.-based Knoebel Construction, which previously completed projects in Missouri for Schnuck Markets in Dardenne Prairie and Sunset Hills and is currently renovating a location in Jefferson City.

“We were excited to work on this new concept for Schnucks and know that this format is going to be a fantastic success, especially in such a deserving community as Jasper, Indiana,” said Bryon Muir, director of business development at Knoebel Construction. “The people and the town of Jasper have been so welcoming of Schnucks and the Knoebel Construction team. We are very thankful we were given the opportunity to bring this innovative concept to fruition for both our client and their future customers.”

Exploring different store concepts is nothing new for Schnucks, which overall operates 111 stores in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. In June 2020, the company launched a 42,000-square-foot specialty store dubbed “EatWell, A Natural Food Store by Schnucks” in Columbia, Mo. And in November, Schnucks rebannered and upgraded its ground-breaking “Culinaria” store in downtown St. Louis as “Schnucks Downtown.”

“We’re excited to expand into the Jasper community and to be able to continue on our company’s mission to ‘Nourish People’s Lives’ in an area new to Schnucks,” Schnuck said in announcing the Schnucks Fresh store in March.

The new Jasper store will mark Schnucks’ seventh location in Indiana, where the chain operates six supermarkets in the Evansville area that employ 795 workers.

Schnucks currently operates 111 stores, serving customers in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
