The diet that Mark Haub used to lose 27 pounds in two months more than proves his theory: Only calories count.
Haub, a professor who teaches nutrition at Kansas State University, subsisted on a steady supply of junk food — snack cakes, doughnuts and soda — that made up two-thirds of his diet. His secret? Aside from a multivitamin, a protein shake and a small serving of vegetables, Haub limited his junk food intake to 1,800-calories a day, well under the 2,000 calories the Food and Drug Administration uses in determining recommended daily intake.
Not only did Haub lose weight, he lowered his body mass index, his triglycerides and his so-called bad cholesterol.
Observed one fellow nutritionist of Haub's feat: “Is that the bottom line to being healthy? That's another story.”
