National Brands Tap Consumer Preferences

ST. LOUIS — Budweiser is the latest brand to put its products to a consumer vote.

“Project 12” began in early spring when Budweiser’s 12 brewmasters were asked to write a unique beer recipe. Six of the recipes were selected to be brewed in small batches.

Now, after a summer-long sampling effort involving feedback from thousands of consumers at dozens of events, Budweiser has decided which three beers will be available in a limited-edition sampler pack this fall.

They are Budweiser Batch No. 91406 (Los Angeles), a deep-amber lager with 6% alcohol by volume; Budweiser Batch No. 63118 (St. Louis), a deep-golden pilsner with 6% ABV; and Budweiser Batch No. 23185 (Williamsburg, Va.), a bourbon cask lager with 5.5% ABV.

Budweiser will continue to request feedback from beer drinkers on these three beers via a QR code on the package, as well as an in-pack flighting sheet. The flighting sheet also includes tasting notes and details about each beer for in-home tastings.

Frito-Lay is also demonstrating that it values consumer taste. The brand is conducting a “Do Us a Flavor” contest that invites fans to submit their potato chip flavor idea for a chance to win $1 million or 1% of their flavor’s 2013 net sales, whichever is higher. Through Oct. 6, consumers can share their flavor inspirations on the Lay’s Facebook page, with the winning flavor being revealed in 2013.
