ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores reported yesterday it is encouraging its member companies to support programs and offer diverse products that enrich the mind, body and spirit alike under the theme of the eighth annual National Women’s Health Week: “It’s Your Time: Pamper Your Mind, Body, and Spirit.” The 2007 National Women’s Health Week begins on Mother’s Day, May 13, and concludes May 19. “From the front of the store to the pharmacy, NACDS member companies meet women’s health and wellness needs daily,” said Edith Rosato, NACDS senior vice president of pharmacy affairs and the NACDS Foundation. Also this week the association bestowed its first “Community Pharmacy Great Communicator” designation to recognize Senator Michael Enzi, R-Wyo., for his comments on the Senate floor about the important role of community pharmacy in improved patient outcomes. On May 3, during debate on the FDA Revitalization Act, Sen. Enzi said: “I am a strong supporter of people getting drugs from their local pharmacist, the one who will help you interpret all of the sheets of paper that come with the prescription.” NACDS also sent a letter to the Washington Post this week in response to a May 5 editorial called “Unsustainable Medicare.” The letter underlines the health care cost savings that result from patients' adherence to appropriate medicinal therapy and the role of community pharmacy in educating consumers about the proper use of their medications.
