LANDOVER, Md. (FNS) -- David N. Freedman, senior vice president of corporate facilities for Giant Food here and president of its construction subsidiary, died after a bout with cancer. He was 67.

Before coming to Giant, Freedman served as director of construction and engineering for Stop & Shop Cos., Quincy, Mass.

A native of Boston, Freedman earned a B.A. in geology from Brown University and a B.S. in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He served as a special agent with the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps and worked with numerous community, professional and service organizations.

During his career with Giant, Freedman oversaw tremendous growth in the chain, including the construction of more than 90 Giant and Super G units, three freestanding pharmacies, a gourmet-food store and 19 shopping centers. He also championed and oversaw construction of Giant's headquarters.

Freedman, of Rockville, Md., died Dec. 3 at Suburban Hospital here, according to a statement from Giant Food. Freedman is survived by his wife, Barbara; and two sons, Jonathan, of Avon, Colo., and Peter, of Rockville, Md.
