Three CEOs Named As Directors by FMI

Institute here named Robert G. Miller, president and chief executive officer of Fred Meyer Inc., Portland, Ore.; Sidney Applebaum, chairman and CEO of Holiday Foods, Plymouth, Minn.; and James Donald, president and CEO of Pathmark Stores, Woodbridge, N.J., to its board of directors.

Miller, also a member of the board of directors of PacifiCorp, SMG-Holdings Corp., the Oregon Business Council, The Fred Meyer Challenge and other organizations, began working in retailing in 1961 as a clerk with All American Stores. After the company was acquired by Albertson's, Miller worked in various other positions until 1989, when he was named executive vice president of Albertson's retail operations. He has been with Fred Meyer since 1991.

Applebaum began his career with the Applebaum family-owned chain that numbered 30 stores by 1979. In 1982 Applebaum became CEO of Rainbow Foods, a chain acquired by Fleming Cos. in 1994, and in 1997 his Sidco Food Co. acquired the Twin Cities Holiday Foods stores. Applebaum is also involved in many community activities, such as the University of Minnesota's Children's Cancer Research Fund.

Donald had his start in the industry as a trainee with Publix Super Markets in 1971. He joined Albertson's in 1975, and eventually rose to head of its operations in Phoenix. In 1991 Sam Walton chose Donald to help Wal-Mart establish a presence in the supermarket industry. Donald joined Pathmark in 1996.

The Food Marketing Institute is a nonprofit association that conducts research, educational and public affairs activities on behalf of its 1,500 members.

Pay Less Appoints Four VPs

ANDERSON, Ind. -- In the wake of the retirement of Bill Fleming, vice president of sales and merchandising, Pay Less Supermarkets here announced four vice presidential appointments. Fleming retired after 36 years with the company.

Everett Muterspaugh succeeds Fleming as vice president of sales and marketing after most recently working as vice president of operations. Muterspaugh, who started with the company as a sack clerk in 1953, reports to Larry D. Contos, president and chief executive officer.

Succeeding Muterspaugh as vice president of operations is Bob Albregts, most recently vice president of human resources. Albregts started at Pay Less as a sack clerk and has since worked in various management positions, such as director of store management development and director of operations. He reports to Contos.

Kim Contos, most recently director of special projects, succeeds Albregts as vice president of human resources. Kim Contos has been involved with the company since 1986 and reports to Albregts.

Dixie Contos takes on a new position as vice president of public relations and consumer affairs. Dixie Contos was most recently director of public relations and consumer affairs and reports directly to the president in this new position. Contos first worked as a part-time cashier for the company while attending Purdue University. Immediately after graduating, she pursued a career in early childhood education, but she returned to Pay Less in 1986. She is also involved in many community-related activities, such as the Anderson Little 500 Festival.
