WASHINGTON -- Supermarket companies in 1993-94 recorded their most profitable year in three years, according to a financial review of the industry compiled by the Food Marketing Institute here.

Pretax income, according to FMI's industry review, also showed an improvement in 1993-94, rising to 1.70% of sales from 1.31% the previous period.
The complete industry review, titled "1993-1994 Annual Financial Review," will be available through FMI this month. It is based on the results of 128 companies operating 13,479 stores.
