he Video Software Dealers Association here has issued an expanded version of its six-year-old "Pledge to Parents Program" designed to assure consumers that participating retailers will observe the ratings systems when renting videos and video games. The association is asking retailers to check IDs when applying age restrictions and to familiarize customers with these policies.

In addition, the association is putting out a special "tool kit," with posters and other display materials, highlighting the movie and video-game rating systems. The kits also are being sent to state and federal political leaders, said Crossan "Bo" Andersen, VSDA president.

The VSDA also recently announced a co-promotion with the American Film Institute, Los Angeles, to highlight the AFI's "100 Years . . . 100 Stars" program. The campaign highlighting the top stars and top film legends kicked off with a television special June 15. The VSDA is offering members a merchandising kit including posters, stickers, an ad slick, header signs and shelf wobblers.

Monthly Exclusive For Dreamcast

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Hollywood Entertainment here is getting a one-month exclusive next month of hardware and software rentals of the new Dreamcast game system from Sega of America, San Francisco. Three games will be made available along with the system, according to press reports. Sega has reported 200,000 pre-orders for the Dreamcast system.

Meanwhile, Hollywood said it plans to open up to 18 new stores in Florida by next year. "They are looking at additional stores throughout the state of Florida and have a very aggressive expansion plan," said Dave Relin, a tenant representative with Trammell Crow, Tampa.
